Why We Don’t Add Phthalates to Our Candles

Because what you breathe matters.

At Virtue Candles, we’re committed to creating products that are as safe as they are beautiful. One of the most important decisions we make during the candle-making process is what not to include—like phthalates.

So, What Are Phthalates?

Phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) are synthetic chemicals often used in fragrance to make the scent last longer. They’re commonly found in mass-produced candles, air fresheners, and personal care products. But here’s the problem: phthalates have been linked to a range of health concerns—including hormonal disruption, respiratory irritation, and developmental issues.

When burned in candles, phthalates are released into the air and inhaled. Over time, that can contribute to indoor air pollution and pose risks—especially for sensitive individuals, children, and pets.

Why We Leave Them Out

We don’t believe that a longer-lasting scent is worth compromising your health. That’s why every Virtue Candle is made without phthalates, carcinogens, or other harmful additives. Instead, we use high-quality, clean fragrance oils that are both beautiful and safe to breathe.

Combined with our coconut-apricot wax and natural wooden wicks, our candles burn cleanly and evenly—without releasing toxins into your space.

A Safer, More Mindful Glow

Choosing candles should be simple. That’s why we keep our ingredient list short, transparent, and thoughtful—so you can enjoy the ambiance you love, without worrying about what’s in the air.
